In 2000, Borthwick Guy Bettenhausen, Inc. was selected, after an extensive proposal and public interview process, to be the prime consultant for this $15 million, 2.5-mile Railroad Corridor Pedestrian Beach Trail.
The decomposed granite trail is located at the base of the oceanfront bluffs that run the entire length of the City and features bridges, handicap accessible ramps, and related trail and beach access facilities. At key locations such as North Beach, the Municipal Pier and Calafia Beach, pedestrian accent areas were developed with benches, public art and landscaping.

BGB coordination for the project included eleven (11) regional, statewide, and federal public agencies. The trail was completed in 2008, and public use has far exceeded orginal projections. The project has received awards from SCC / ASLA and APA, among other local recognition.
