Project Description
MAIN BEACH PARK
Constructed in the early 1970’s, the original design for Main Beach Park did not allow stormwater from Laguna Canyon to flow directly to the ocean. As a result of this condition, the park incurred major stormwater damage in the winter of 1992. The central plaza, a long stretch of boardwalk, walkways, related landscaping, and a section of Coast Highway were all heavily damaged by this storm.
Borthwick • Guy • Bettenhausen, Inc. was lead site planner in redesigning the central plaza area and restoring the famous Laguna Boardwalk. The new boardwalk allows free flow of stormwater under the walkway in flood conditions, preventing the buildup that formerly occurred. Beach access stairways, seating and landscape improvements were also part of this project.
